Common Question About IV Iron
Is IV iron safe?
IV iron is generally very well tolerated when prescribed appropriately and administered in a monitored clinical setting. At Aurora Health & Wellness, your treatment is based on your lab work and medical history, and infusions are performed by an experienced registered nurse with ongoing monitoring to ensure your safety and comfort. Risks will be discussed with Dr. Spencer during your iron IV consultation.
How quickly will I feel better?
Some patients notice improvement within days to weeks, while for others it can be more gradual. This depends on your starting iron levels, overall health, and how your body responds to treatment.
How long does the appointment take?
Most IV iron appointments take approximately 60–90 minutes. This includes time for setup, the infusion itself, and a short observation period to ensure you’re feeling well before you leave.
Do I need lab work first?
Yes. Your lab work is reviewed to determine whether IV iron is appropriate for you and to guide dosing. Labs should be recent (within the past 3 months). If you already have results, we can review them together, or we can arrange testing as part of your initial consultation.
Do I need to be a patient of Dr. Spencer to receive IV iron?
No. You can book a consultation specifically to assess whether IV iron is appropriate for you. Care can remain shared with your primary provider, and we’re happy to collaborate to ensure continuity.
Is IV Iron covered by insurance?
Coverage varies depending on your plan. Naturopathic visits are often eligible under extended health benefits, and we offer direct billing where available. Some patients may also have coverage for the IV iron prescription itself. IV supply fees are typically out of pocket. We can walk you through coverage in your IV consultation.
How much does IV iron therapy cost?
The total cost varies depending on your individual treatment plan. This typically includes a consultation, the IV iron prescription, the IV appointment itself, and a supply fee. Naturopathic visits may be covered under extended health benefits, and some patients have coverage for the IV iron prescription itself. We’re happy to review expected costs with you before your appointment.
